    Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the rationale for coordinating statutory and voluntary services by examining the nature and extent of collaboration between voluntary and statutory providers of services to adults with disabilities in a sample of local authority areas, and to consider whether and in what way this partnership affected the service provided.

In order to do this is was necessary first to describe the origins and development of the voluntary and statutory sectors, and then to define what is meant by the voluntary and statutory sectors by describing the development of collaboration/ coordination in welfare policy, by discussing models of coordination, and by defining what is meant by community care. The study considered and proposed 4 models of management which would enable the coordination of community care services to take place.
