    Abstract

Pwrpas y gwaith hwn yw asesu anghenion arholiadol oedolion sydd yn dysgu Cymraeg fel ail-iaith. Yr oedd nifer o oedolion yn sefyll Arholiad Safon Gyffredin (03) Cyd-Bwyllgor Addysg Cymru ac er iddynt fod yn llwyddiannus yn yr arholiad hwnnw, nid oedd yn berthnasol i'w hanghenion na'u profiad. 0 sylweddoli hyn, sefydlwyd prosiect gan y Cyd-Bwyllgor i benderfynu a oedd angen darparu arholiad a fyddai'n addas i oedolion. Y peth cyntaf a wnaed oedd ceisio barn y dysgwyr eu hunain. Yr oedd yn bwysig cysylltu a myfyrwyr o bob safon a oedd yn dilyn y gwahanol gyrsiau Cymraeg i oedolion. Yn ogystal a cheisio eu barn am arholiad newydd, yr oedd yn angenrheidiol casglu gwybodaeth am y dysgwyr eu hunain. Anfonwyd oliaduron at ddysgwyr, a cheir adroddiad manwl ar eu hyraateb yn y traethawd hwn. Y cam nesaf, wedi i'r syniad o arholiad gael derbyniad da, oedd penderfynu ar natur yr arholiad ei hun. Roedd hyn yn golygu arbrofi mewn dosbarthiadau Cymraeg a chyda phlant ysgol er mwyn safoni'r profion i gyfateb i Safon 03 o ran cynnwys ac anhawster.

Pan oedd y profion yn barod, cynhaliwyd arholiad prawf yn I983-Dyfarnwyd Tystysgrif Adran Gymraeg Cyd-Bwyllgor Addysg Cymru i'r mgeiswyr llwyddiannus ac yn sgil ei Iwyddiant derbyniodd y Cyd-Bwyllgor yr arholiad yn Arholiad Safon Gyffredin (03) swyddogol n 1984.

Yr oedd yr arholiad yn cael ei gynnig am y tro cyntaf yn 1984, a cheir yn y traethawd hwn ddadansoddiad ohono, gan gynnwys astudiaeth o berfformiad yr ymgeiswyr yn 1984 ac yn ystod y cyfnod arbrofi. Dylai hyn fod o ddiddordeb i athrawon Cymraeg fel ailiaith gan ei fod yn dangos gwendidau'r dysgwyr yn ogystal a'u ryfderau.

The purpose of this work is to assess the examination needs of adults learning Welsh as a second language. A number of adults sat the Welsh Joint Education Committee Ordinary Level examination (03) and though they were successful in that examination, it was not relevant to their needs or experience. Realising this, the W.J.E.C. established a project to determine whether there was a need for an examination that would be suitable for adults.

The first thing to be done was to canvass the opinion of the learners themselves. It was important to contact students of all standards who attended the various Welsh courses for adults. As well as seeking their opinion of a new examination, it was essential to collect information about the learners themselves. Questionnaires were sent to learners and there is a detailed account of their responses in this thesis.

The next step, following a good reception for the idea of an examination, was to determine the nature of that examination. This meant experimental testing in Welsh classes and with school pupils in order to ensure that in terms of content and standard the test corresponded with Ordinary Level (03). When the tests were ready, a trial examination was held in 1983* The Welsh Department Certificate of the Welsh-Joint Education Committee was awarded to the successful candidates and following its success the examination was accepted by the W.J.E.C. as an official Ordinary Level Examination (03) in 1984.

The examination was offered for the first time in 1984, and there is an assessment of it in this thesis, including a study of the performance of the candidates in 1984 and during the experimental period. This should be of interest to teachers of Welsh as a second language as it highlights both the strengths and weaknesses of the learners.
