Abstract
The Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) R&D work on the oil palm crop is discussed. The work undertaken by various divisions of the MPOB in fields such as biology research, engineering and process research, product development research, and economics and industrial development are described. Crop biotechnology is an important research field that involves areas such as tissue culture, marker-assisted selection, and genomics. The MPOB's work towards the development of oil palm products for higher-value niche markets, as well as the organization's focus on the environmental aspects of oil palm agriculture are also discussed.
