Abstract

What determines abundance is a fundamental question in ecology. It is well documented that animal abundance varies with, elevation and broad-scale environmental gradients. However, what determines species abundance at a fine spatial scale is less understood, and is becoming an increasingly important due to increased anthropogenic change and habitat fragmentation. We investigated which niche axes are most important in determining anole abundance, within forest habitats across a series of 20 x 20m plots. We examined three niche axes relevant to anoles which are thermal habitat quality (3), structural habitat quality and prey availability.
