Abstract

Smart irrigation systems enabled by blockchain and the Internet of Agricultural Things (IoAT), agriculture is no longer under existential threat due to groundwater scarcity; sustainable farming has become a possibility. Over-pumping and depleted aquifers are depleting the vital irrigation water source, ground-water as warmer planet sows floods by storms rampage. Smart Irrigation uses real-time data from the Internet of Things (IoAT) sensors to improve water use efficiency and savings. The secure and transparent nature of the blockchain technology guarantees that water distribution is impartial, sustainable farming practices are enforced through smart contracts. Farmers can use these state-of-the-art technologies to make informed decisions, which would help in minimal water wastage and getting a better crop output. Not only does it combat the issue of over-extraction from aquifers, but also serves as a tool to drive sustainable agriculture practices into the future, ensuring water secure food production in an environmentally challenged world.
