    Abstract

Occupational research on higher education (HE) and further education (FE) is an area of study that has been neglected in educational research, and in employment research on occupations (Gornall, 1999).As a result, and whilst there are some moves to address this (Musselin, 2007), there is a paucity of qualitative data not only on Lecturing staffs’ careers and aspects of professionalism,
but on the changing nature of educational and teaching work as
    employment.
