Abstract

Introduction:

Social prescribing uses a person-centred approach to empower individuals through engagement with different community-based initiatives and activities (Kimberlee, 2015; Newstead et al., 2023; SCIE, 2020).Within Wales, social prescribing has previously been defined as ‘connecting citizens to community support to better manage their health and wellbeing (Rees et al., 2019). The social prescribing pathway provides a means to facilitate the integration of healthcare, social care and community support, allowing individuals to take an active role in improving their health and wellbeing (Kurpas et al., 2023; Rothe & Hiess, 2022). In contrast to the English model of social prescribing, which is predominantly based in primary care, Wales has developed a cross-sectional model, integrated with existing community and statutory services (PHW, 2018; Wallace et al., 2021). It uses holistic and person-centred methods to improve wellbeing (Pringle & Jesurasa, 2022) that consider the biomedical, psychological and social dimensions of health and wellbeing (Husk et al., 2020 Valentijn et al., 2013). However, it is currently unclear what the role of community pharmacies is within the social prescribing pathway and how social prescribing is being incorporated into the support they provide. For example, Welsh Government recently published their National Framework for Social Prescribing (2023), which fails to mention the role of pharmacists or community pharmacies in social prescribing.
