    Abstract

One of the most pronounced trends in international business in recent years has been the emergence and growth of Transnational Retail Corporations such as Walmart, Tesco and Carrefour. In 1980 retailers did not figure in the list of the world's largest multinational enterprises, but now, according to UNCTAD (e.g. World Investment Report, 2007), retailing has become the second largest industry category of global foreign direct investment. Despite this dramatic growth in its significance, international retailing remains poorly understood within the international business and management literature. This special session seeks to address the development of international retailing during the first and second global economies.
