Abstract
This comparative historical perspective puts some of the pieces of the 'youth work puzzle' together through an exploration - across differerent contexts and continents - of the ways in which youth work has connected voluntarily, or been connected, or resisted connection with wider policy imperatives concerned with young people, producing greater or lesser levels of autonomy for its proclaimed distinctive practice.
