Abstract
G2NA was established to promote the integration of genomics across everyday nursing practice. Participation is free and open to anyone with an interest in genomics within nursing practice, education, policy, leadership and/or research. G2NA currently has representation in over 30 countries. As the largest and most trusted profession within the healthcare workforce, nurses have a key role to play in delivering the vision of equitable access to genomics for all of the world’s population. In geographically challenging and resource-limited countries and regions, nurses are often the primary point of contact.
Building on previous research and networking efforts, a key focus of G2NA is establishing Global Essential Competencies in Genomics. Such competencies would be required by all nurses irrespective of professional role, academic preparation, country, healthcare system or population they serve. G2NA is working collaboratively to achieve geographically diverse participation from countries where nursing has not typically been associated with genomics. Working with an international advisory group, G2NA is actively developing links within Sigma (a professional nursing organisation with >100,000 members globally), WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery, and the International Council for Nurses (a federation of >130 national nursing associations).
The competencies are being developed using Group Concept Mapping methodology that leverages the groupwisdomTM platform. A review of the genetic/genomic competency literature (all health professional groups) has been completed and will be used to compliment the ‘brainstorming’ (first stage) of the group concept mapping.
Progress to date, as well as the importance of endorsement and implementation will be presented.
