Sonic Scholarship: The Audio Essay as AI-Enhanced Assessment in Music Engineering & Production: Reimagining Authentic Assessment through Sound, Narrative and AI

This presentation introduces the Audio Essay as an innovative, AI-supported assessment format designed for postgraduate Music Engineering & Production students at the University of South Wales. The Audio Essay replaces traditional written assignments with a research-driven, broadcast-quality sonic format that integrates academic argument, narration, sound design and primary research. The session demonstrates how this assessment enhances student engagement, supports inclusive practice, and aligns with sector-wide shifts toward authentic, digital-first assessments.
