Abstract

Screening the Nation is a major report for the BBC Trust and Audiences Council Wales on the representation of Wales in contemporary high-profile BBC drama made in Wales. The report, which was published in March 2010, draws on interviews with audiences and textual analysis of popular television shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood and Gavin and Stacey to shed light on the complex relationship between television production, its locations and the impact on local, regional and national identity. The report has four sections: 1. A review of relevant literature concerning representation/portrayal and national identity in screen media. 2. Analysis of audience research conducted with focus groups and online, focusing on Doctor Who and Torchwood. 3. Analysis of press reports on Doctor Who and Torchwood. 4. Analysis of key programes, including Doctor Who and Torchwood, Gavin and Stacey and Framed. There is also an Executive Summary of the full report available at the above URL.
