    Abstract

Since its emergence as an alternative approach to traditional security studies, securitization has become a very popular framework for researchers of international security. In this chapter, we outline the usefulness of this framework; we analyse the objectivity of the subjectivity of security threats. This chapter discusses the Copenhagen School approach, as well as the important criticism raised towards it. It further aims to outline a framework that helps with the way in which we can use securitization but, while so doing, also outline the challenges in examining empirical security issues. We therefore discuss the historical case of Austria-Hungary Securitization of Serbia prior WW1.
