Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant focus on sustainable SCM initiatives in the Asian garment industry following incidents such as the Rana Plaza factory collapse, the inhuman working conditions of Vietnam, and contamination of the local environment in India. Research related to this includes examining supplier selection processes (Nath et al., 2019), governmental responses (Yadlapalli, 2018) and how suppliers’ operational issues are vital for social sustainability (Huq et al 2016). However, there is a need to also explore more deeply how existing partners can motivate manufacturers to practice sustainability in their existing businesses. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between stakeholders’ pressures and sustainable performance in the Bangladeshi garment industry’s supply chain and which contextual factors/strategies influence the sustainability of their existing supply chains.
