Press coverage of landmark television and the small nation: Doctor Who, Torchood, and Wales

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

The paper discusses analysis of press reports surrounding Doctor Who and Torchwood in both the local and national press. This was intended to examine how discourses surrounding landmark television and a sense of place were articulated extra-textually, that is, not through the programmes themselves but within the secondary texts which circulate around them. The paper discusses the results of analysis of press reports from 2004-2008, gathered using the Lexus Nexus search engine. Searches were conducted using the terms 'Doctor Who' and 'Cardiff' or 'Wales', and 'Torchwood' and 'Cardiff' or 'Wales'. The research discussed in this paper was part of a large project on Wales, portrayal and television drama, undertaken in collaboration with the BBC Audience Council Wales.
