Abstract
The MARINES (Multi-Agent Realm for Investigating Navigators' Educational
Simulators) testbed is being developed to investigate ways of making ship
bridge simulators easier to control and more realistic. The testbed emulates the
instructor station of a marine simulator. A number of target ships are controlled
by intelligent agents which perform collision avoidance based on the
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. The agent control of
each ship can be enabled or disabled by the instructor, allowing the instructor
to operate the simulation in a conventional manner. A simple 3D view of the
scene has been generated, enabling the instructor to observe the simulation
from the agents' perspectives. In order to avoid land and return the ships to
their desired tracks, agents are now being implemented to navigate the ships
avoiding fixed hazards and counteracting the set and drift of the current.
