Mapping active travel variations in access to key services in Wales

Research output: Other contributionpeer-review

Abstract

This WISERD briefing paper provides theoretical and technical background information and further methodological details to support the recent publication of a website. The website presents mapped information regarding geographical accessibility to key services across Wales (GP Surgeries, Pharmacies, Grocery Shopping, Post Offices, Schools, Libraries and Sports Facilities) at fine spatial scale. Scores are computed for every residential postcode and report the range of opportunities and the total number of sites that are reachable when travelling via alternative transport modes. Travel modes accommodated are private car, public bus services, and active travel via cycling and walking. Analyses are based on the computation of isochrones defined by a user selectable maximum travel time ranging from 5 to 30 minutes, in 5 minute intervals.
