Abstract
Manufacturing industry has changed rapidly over the course of the last 20 years. Significant paradigm shifts and technological advancements will continue as UK industry continually adjusts to the opportunities and threats that it faces today and in the future. The emergence of new manufacturing technologies, new management systems, organizational structures, and decision-making methods will lead to new products and processes. The UK Foresight panel report into the Future of Manufacturing 2050 highlight the importance of manufacturing to the UK economy and describe the changing nature of the modern manufacturing environment. The report highlights the major technical challenges for manufacturing industry. Through a survey of 50 manufacturing supply chain companies, the objective of this paper is to identify the key challenges and issues faced by supply chain companies in the UK. Direct feedback from industrialists will inform the analysis of how and in what way UK manufacturers can meet these challenges.
