Living in Uncertainty: Vulnerable Rohingya in Bangladesh

The Rohingya, forcibly displaced from Myanmar and currently living in Bangladesh, represent one of the most persecuted groups. Over a million Rohingya have been living in Cox's Bazar in the various makeshift camps, and most of them came during the 2017 influx, which has created serious concerns about health, education, human trafficking, gender-based violence, and the overall well-being of these vulnerable people. Besides, the entire community lives with a consuming frustration because of restricted mobility outside the camps. Against this backdrop, this chapter investigates the uncertainties of living in such difficulties, with a generation growing up without any solid cultural moorings and a sense of identity. This research demonstrates that despite various interventions in the camps, the uncertainties and vulnerabilities of the Rohingya have compounded over time as repatriation has become a distant reality resulting in forcing them to unsafe migration and high-risk unauthorized work.
