Inclusive Practice and Sign Supported Communication

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

During this workshop a social model interpretation of disability will be presented, in the context of health and wellness, as well as a consideration of approaches and tools to reduce barriers to participation for individuals with disabilities in our society. Initially a broad introduction to a range of signing systems will be provided, before focusing in more detail on the specific SignAlong methodology. Participants will be introduced to the philosophy and method of the approach, and learn a range of conversational signs through games and experiential learning opportunities. This is an example of a communicative method which can support service users' wellbeing by enabling meaningful communication and relationships to flourish.
