Abstract
This article provides a detailed re-reading of one of Charles Lamb’s most problematic essays in the Essays of Elia series, ‘Imperfect Sympathies’, arguing that in it Lamb deploys ‘that dangerous figure, irony’ with such subtlety that the article itself has previously consistently been misread.
