Abstract
From 2014 to 2017, Sport Wales, on behalf of UK Sport and the Scottish, Northern Irish, Welsh and English Home Country Sports Councils, co-ordinated and delivered a UK wide Performance Leadership Development Programme. The aim of the Programme was to produce world class Performance Leaders at Home Country level. Further, the Programme set-out to provide those in Performance Leadership roles in National Governing Bodies of Sport with opportunities to learn, develop and improve how they carry out their role with a view to improving performance pathways within sports.
As part of the Programme’s evaluation procedures, Sport Wales, in collaboration with the University of South Wales, commissioned a qualitative examination of the participating Performance Leaders’ experiences of the programme, as well as the experiences of those providing mentor support to the candidates during the Programme. Specifically, the aims of this evaluation were to:
1. Examine the effectiveness of the programme in line with its aims from a candidate and mentor perspective.
2. Explore the impact of the programme on how Performance Leaders have been able to manage and successfully cope with the demands they experience in their roles.
