Abstract
This graduate-level textbook explores the intersection of outdoor pedagogy, schematic play, and the use of loose parts in early childhood education. Grounded in affordance theory, the book introduces readers to the concept of schemas—repeated patterns in children’s play that offer insight into their thinking and development. Through a detailed examination of various schemas such as trajectory, rotation, transporting, and enveloping, the authors demonstrate how loose parts can be intentionally used to support and extend schematic learning in outdoor environments. The text provides a practical and theoretical framework for educators to observe, interpret, and respond to children’s play in ways that nurture holistic development and curriculum enrichment. With a strong emphasis on reflective practice, this book offers a new lens for early years professionals to elevate their outdoor pedagogy and deepen their understanding of child-led learning.
