Disaster Nursing as a Virtuous Practice

Abstract

Disaster settings present unique and sometimes irresolvable moral dilemmas to nurses. Orthodox healthcare ethics based on utility maximisation or the fulfilment of duties and obligations can fail to provide solutions to such dilemmas. Focussing on the nurse as a virtuous practitioner who must decide and act in suboptimal situations provides and alternative provides an way of working in irresolvable dilemmas.
