Abstract
Our knowledge of the genetic basis of cancer has made quantum leaps. We know that tumours develop because of gene mutations which accumulate in a stepwise fashion, and some of the genes responsible for inherited cancers such as breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer have now been identified. Maggie Kirk and Kevin McDonald describe the genetics education framework that will enable nurses to understand this new information and apply it to practice.
