Abstract

This paper presents the design of an innovative millimeter-wave elliptical microstrip patch antenna featuring a defected ground structure for body-centric communication applications. The antenna, with compact dimensions of 8 × 8 ~mm2, is constructed on a Rogers RT5880 substrate, which has a relative permittivity of 2.2 and a thickness of 0.508 mm. Its performance is analyzed both in free space and on a human body model. A three-layer human tissue model (skin, fat, and muscle) is developed in CST Microwave Studio to evaluate the influence of body tissues on antenna behavior. The simulation results, including return loss, surface current distribution, and radiation pattern, are discussed in detail.
