Climate Change and Music Therapy: A short report exploring considerations for the profession and clinical practice through the lens of a pilot research project.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This report explores the issue of climate change and the music therapy profession. It uses the data from a small research study undertaken in Wales amongst practising music therapists to explore these matters. The study was designed as part of an MA Music Therapy programme teaching aid to support students in learning how to develop research projects. The study showed that music therapists are beginning to consider what aspects of music therapy practice can be utilised to reduce the impact of the profession on climate change. These centred around resources consumed during work such as travel methods and instrument purchase with some innovative ideas for reusing instruments and reducing travel. The report showed that there is a need for policy makers and professional associations to create guidelines to support this aspect of practice as clients are beginning to be impacted by eco-anxiety and are bringing this to their music therapy.
