Cannibals in the Brecon Beacons: Monstrosity and horror in BBC Wales' Torchwood

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This paper examines how the television show Torchwood engages with the horror genre. It explored how the show represents monstrosity differently though female and male characters before examining how Torchwood depicts alien technology as monstrous for its ability to cross borders such as dead/alive and past/present. The paper also locates Torchwood within its context as a production of BBC Wales, examining how its contestable status as 'Welsh' constructs and undercuts its representations of horror and monstrosity, and situating Torchwood both within wider debates surrounding television horror and the context of questions regarding contemporary Welsh television.
