Abstract
This report evaluates the feasibility and potential benefits of Newport achieving accreditation as a Living Wage City. The study explores the economic, social, and business impacts of adopting the Real Living Wage (RLW), which exceeds the statutory minimum wage and reflects the true cost of living. By analyzing Newport's local labor market, industry composition, and wage distribution, alongside case studies from other accredited cities, the report outlines a strategic pathway for Newport to become a Living Wage City.
Key findings highlight the RLW's capacity to reduce in-work poverty, address wage inequality, and boost local economic growth. The report identifies challenges, particularly for small and micro-businesses that dominate Newport's economy, but also proposes actionable recommendations, including establishing a Newport Living Wage Action Group, targeting low-pay sectors, and engaging with stakeholders to foster cross-sector collaboration. The report concludes that becoming a Living Wage City could significantly improve quality of life for Newport's residents while positioning the city as a leader in ethical employment practices.
