Abstract
Purpose:
The purpose and aim of this study is to explore and understand the Marwari business community’s approach to Entrepreneurship. Despite its prominent contribution to the Indian Business and Economic landscape, from being mere shopkeepers in 19th century to making up a quarter of names on the Forbes billionaires list in 21st century (Timberg, 2014), the Marwaris have been under-studied. This study intends to explore and understand why the Marwaris are successful by developing insights into their socio-cultural context and approach to business. Unique Socio-cultural contexts of Ethnic communities and their intangible elements have been acknowledged to tangibly influence ethnic businesses (Angaddwita et al., 2017; Rath, 2000). Further, Sarasvathy (2001) argues that ‘Expert entrepreneurs’ tend to behave Effectually while non-Entrepreneurs tend to have a causal/predictive approach (Dew et al., 2009). Considering the above, this study sets the following research questions:
* To explore the Marwari Socio-cultural context and its elements.
* To understand the role of the Marwari Socio-cultural context and its elements on the Marwari Business Community’s approach to Entrepreneurship.
* To understand the role of the Marwari family and community in the Marwari approach to Entrepreneurship.
* To identify and report characteristics of Effectuation and prediction found within the Marwari approach to Entrepreneurship.
