A Psychological Approach to Technology Acceptance in Social Housing

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

This seminar will explore the critical issue of technology acceptance in social housing and reflect an 18-month collaboration between academia and the housing sector in Wales. As housing providers increasingly adopt innovative technologies to enhance sustainability and improve tenants' quality of life, understanding the psychological factors underpinning acceptance is essential.

The session will feature four presentations grounded in psychological research and theory. The first will present a systematic review of studies on technology acceptance in housing, examining the cognitive, behavioural, and social factors that influence adoption. The second will highlight tenants’ perspectives, focusing on their experiences, attitudes, and concerns regarding new technologies. The third presentation will introduce a prototype tool for measuring technology acceptance, designed to assess psychological readiness and predict uptake. Finally, a system mapping exercise will explore the dynamics of implementing new technologies, emphasising the psychological and relational aspects of engaging tenants and other stakeholders.

The seminar will include a facilitated Q&A session, providing space for dialogue between academics, housing professionals, and delegates. By combining psychological insights with practical applications, this event offers a unique perspective on overcoming barriers to technology acceptance in social housing, helping to shape strategies that centre on the needs and behaviours of tenants.
