Abstract
This report presents a Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach to automating the production of stowage plans for container-ships. Container-ships visit many ports along a route, unloading containers destined for each port and loading containers destined for subsequent ports. Stowage plans must be devised which arrange containerized cargo so that this process may be performed cost-effectively, taking into account the consequences loads at one port have for subsequent ports. We describe the process of modelling this problem in a form suitable for solution by a GA, and provide details of the solution procedure by the minimisation of cost related to stowage objectives.
