What does a world class coach educator look like?’ Exploring effective coach education within a European football context: A multi-national study

Project Details

Description

Two main issues relating to coach education have become increasingly highlighted: (1) the misunderstood nature of the coach educator role; and (2) coach educators’ inability to balance coach learners’ needs (i.e., self-determined learning) with the delivery of coach qualification content, thus inhibiting the development of an expert coach education workforce.

Consequently, this project aims to address these issues via a rigorous examination of current Level 4 and 5 coach education programme delivery, to understand what effective coach education looks like across different UEFA National Associations. 20 participants, aged 18 and over, will be recruited who: (a) currently work as a coach educator for a UEFA National Association at Levels 4 and/or 5; and (b) have worked as a coach educator for three years minimum. Data will be collected through online, semi-structured interviews. The knowledge generated through the proposed project would better position National Associations to make evidence informed decisions about the efficacy of the learning processes integrated into their coach education provision.

This project is being funded by a research grant from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the lead governing body of association football in Europe. This project is also being supported by the Football Association of Wales, whose strategic priority is to be a world class coaching nation.
