Welsh Rugby Union National Schools & Colleges Physical Profiling Project

Project Details

Description

Welsh Schools and Colleges (WSC) play a fundamental role in the rugby union player development pathway in Wales. Managed and licenced by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), the WSC league comprises the 16 best school and college teams from across Wales.

As part of this licence, teams attend pre- and post-season physical profiling (e.g., speed, power, strength, endurance), which is conducted by members of the Performance, Injury & Sports Therapy RIG theme at USW.

The aims of this project, and collaboration with the WRU, are to: report normative data for this population, which can be used for talent identification and benchmarking; track the physical development of players over time; determine the physical demands of WSC games; examine the association between physical capacities and game performance; and identify injury risk factors. This project has facilitated MSc student placements, PhD programmes of research, and will result in peer-reviewed publications and translational impact.
