Torfaen Health Determinants Research Unit

Project Details

Description

The Health Determinants Research Collaborative (HDRC) aims to establish a culture of research and evidence-based decision-making within Torfaen County Borough Council (TCBC) to reduce health inequalities among its diverse population. This initiative addresses specific health and wellbeing challenges faced by communities in Torfaen, which has high levels of deprivation.

The HDRC, funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), will focus on understanding the life-course of citizens and how health disparities affect their outcomes. By integrating data and collaborating with local partners—including the University of South Wales, Public Health Wales, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board—the project will develop a robust evidence base to inform effective interventions.

USW plays a vital role, contributing expertise in research, evaluation and data analysis, and co-leading key workstreams. Our involvement supports evidence-based decision-making within the Council and creates a research-active culture that addresses health inequalities while strengthening regional capacity for sustainable development.

This partnership will build a skilled workforce capable of addressing regional health challenges, ultimately attracting further investment and improving public health outcomes. The HDRC is expected to set a benchmark for research quality in Wales, fostering sustainable growth while enhancing health equity in the region.
