Description
In disaster-prone areas, infrastructure like bridges and dams face high risks of structural failure. Traditional inspection methods are costly and often reactive, unable to provide real-time data to prevent catastrophic issues. A predictive monitoring solution is essential to detect early signs of damage, optimise maintenance, and ensure public safety.
The SMART-SHIELD project leverages AI-driven technology to establish a proactive monitoring system. Using drones and advanced sensors, it provides continuous structural health monitoring (SHM), detecting defects early. The system’s learning-based algorithms adapt over time, improving detection accuracy with real-world data. During disasters, SMART-SHIELD offers remote assessments, helping experts manage access to compromised structures, enhancing resilience.
SMART-SHIELD’s benefits include:
Enhanced Safety: Real-time monitoring reduces undetected structural risks.
Cost Efficiency: Automated assessments lower inspection costs.
Sustainability: Proactive maintenance extends infrastructure lifespan.
The intended beneficiaries of the SMART-SHIELD research include civil engineering and construction firms, transportation and infrastructure companies, the energy and utilities sector, highway maintenance companies, and local councils.
