SENESCHAL (Semantic ENrichment Enabling Sustainability of arCHAeological Links)

Project Details

Description

SENESCHAL was a Knowledge Exchange project based on enhanced vocabulary services that made it significantly easier for vocabulary providers to make their vocabularies available as Linked Data and for users to index their data with uniquely identified (machine readable) controlled terminology that is compatible with Linked Data.

SENESCHAL built on STAR and STELLAR , which encountered a lack of vocabulary control (with unique identifiers) that hindered the full potential of the resulting Linked Data. STELLAR tools converted vocabularies to SKOS representation and published as Linked Data on HeritageData.org. Major vocabulary resources from Historic England, Historic Environment Scotland, Royal Commission on Ancient & Historic Monuments Wales (RCAHMW) were used as exemplars and published online. RESTful web services were developed to make the vocabulary resources programmatically accessible and searchable. These web services were used by the Archaeology Data Service to improve data accuracy in its OASIS online index.
