Feminism in South Wales, 1970-1999: From the Women’s Liberation Movement to the National Assembly

Project Details

Description

rom the small, resourceless and seemingly disparate women’s groups that emerged in the early 1970s grew a concerted movement that waged manifold campaigns and made salient progress in improving gender equality in Wales. The story of feminism in south Wales in this period is a distinctive, yet largely unknown, one.

Drawing on records deposited in archives by former members, this monograph will contribute to our understanding of this often-misunderstood movement. A collaboration with Glamorgan Archives, Gwent Archives, West Glamorgan Archive Service, and Women’s Archive Wales will create a digital platform, making these valuable historical sources accessible to a wider audience of researchers, scholars, and the general public interested in the history of feminism.

This research will significantly contribute to the understanding of feminism in South Wales from the 1970s to the 1990s, highlighting the role of grassroots women’s groups in advancing gender equality.
