Description
This study, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, explores the feasibility of Newport becoming an accredited Living Wage City, aligning with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. It assesses current wage levels and employer engagement, identifying key sectors—such as hospitality, retail, and social care -where wage improvements could have the most significant impact.
The research examines barriers to Living Wage adoption and strategies to increase accreditation. The study highlights potential economic and social benefits, including reduced in-work poverty, improved employee retention, and a stronger local economy.
By providing a roadmap for city-wide accreditation, the findings support Newport’s ambition to lead in fair employment practices. This initiative contributes to a more equitable and sustainable local economy, ensuring that workers receive wages reflective of the true cost of living, fostering long-term economic resilience.
