Description
The Bawso Stories project is an innovative partnership project between the University of South Wales’s (USW) Geroge Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling, specialist domestic abuse organisation Bawso, and Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales.
Transforming the ways in which Welsh heritage is understood, preserved and represented, service users who have been supported by Bawso shared their stories with researchers from the University of South Wales and had them archived by the Museum and, where appropriate, made publicly available as part of museum interpretation and on the People’s Collection Wales online archive.
Bawso provides practical and emotional prevention, protection and support services to Black Minority Ethnic (BME) and migrant victims of Domestic Abuse, Sexual Violence, Female Genital Mutilation, Forced Marriage, Honour Based Violence, Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. Wales has a rich heritage of migration that has been only partially documented and many of the stories from people whose entry to Wales is more complex are missing from these histories.
Although keen to be heard, and with fascinating and diverse tales to tell, people supported by Bawso have had few opportunities to share their stories and have them archived for future generations. This project gives voice and audience to the some of stories of those people who have been supported by Bawso, creating a greater understanding of Welsh heritage and identity. In total, 63 stories and oral histories, were created and archived during the Bawso
