I teach statistical thermodynamics on the third year Chemistry module PH3S21 Advanced Physical Chemistry.
My interests in teaching include engaging a range of technologies to support stduent learning, as appropriate to the subject and mode of study. My early experience was in a fully distance learning programme, and I have found significant aspects of that informing my practice in teaching face to face as well as my approach to assessment, where the emphasis is on developing and testing understanding of concepts and in application. As we move to a heavily blended mode in response to COVID-19 I am bringing these two strands together.
In my Faculty leadership roles I have emphasised the value and importance of staff developing their practice in teaching and assessment, better supporting students in their learning and in demonstrating what they have learned. I worked with colleagues to coordinate development events under our Learning Engagement Enhancement Programme, initiated the annual series of Teaching Excellence Seminars in the Faculty and facilitated staff contributions to USW, national and international teaching and learning conferences.
Astronomical research, investigating the activity of evolved stars (classical novae, very-late themal pulse objects, symbiotic stars and related objects), stellar mergers and star forming regions. Observational focus from radio to X-ray wavebands.
I am an author on over 100 refereed publications, emerging from collaborations across Europe, North America, South Africa and India. I chair the oversight committee of the e-MERLIN/VLBI National Facility, on behalf of the funder UK Research & Innovation, and I am a member of the Square Kilometre Array UK Science Committee.
Since an early experience while a research student at Jodrell Bank, I have been active in public engagement, with the aim of both informing the general public about the importance of science, and engaging them in the development of that science. In recent years this has been focussed on supporting others in their public engagement activity, formerly at the University of Central Lancashire, including my School providing significant coverage at the Lancashire Science Festival, and more recently in activities around South Wales such as Soapbox Science, Between the Trees festival and a USW STEM presence at the Urdd Eisteddfod. Most recently we have been pursuing a partnership with Techniquest in Cardiff and the Royal Institution in London.
I have long acted as an ally for those identifying as one or more of LGBT and other identities, and was involved in USW gaining 24th place in the Stonewall Equality Index in 2019 as well as renewing its Athena Swan accreditation in 2020. I have an interest in improving the representation of those currently in a minority within STEM subjects, and see changing the culture and attractiveness of those subjects as key to achieving this. I am an ally member of Spectrum, USW's LGBT+ staff network, and a supporter of both USW's Women in Academia network and the Wales Women in STEM network.
