Expertise

Sarah is Professor of International Security at the University of South Wales and holds a Jean Monnet Chair at Dublin City University. Her main areas of expertise are EU cooperation on internal security, including counter-terrorism, border controls and asylum, and securitization theory.

She holds a PhD in International Politics from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, a Master of Arts in Russian and Eurasian Studies from the University of Leeds, as well as an MA in European Studies and a BA in Politics (International Relations) from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). 

Research interests

Sarah’s research interests lie at the intersection between Security Studies and European Studies. She is particularly interested in the study of securitization processes and the development of the European Union’s internal security policies, especially those relating to asylum, migration and borders, policing, information exchange, as well as counter-terrorism.

Supervision

Sarah welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students or post-doctoral researchers interested in international security, counter-terrorism, intelligence, European integration, EU foreign and security policy, as well as migration, asylum and borders issues.

Sarah has taught modules on a wide range of topics over the years, including International Security, International Relations, Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, European integration, Migration, and Intelligence.

Experience

​Prior to taking up her post as Professor of International Security at the University of South Wales, Sarah was Lecturer in International Security at the University of Salford, Marie Curie Research Fellow at Sciences Po Paris, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Dundee, Associate Professor in International Affairs at Vesalius College, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Professor of International Security at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).
