About

Dr Sadaf Shariat is a Lecturer in Law, based in the USW Business School. In September 2012, Sadaf started her academic career as a Teaching Assistant in a project organised by Newcastle University and Durham University. She worked as a Seminar Leader for Intellectual Property Law, EU Constitutional Law and Commercial Law modules at Durham Law School from 2014 to 2017. She also worked as a Sessional Lecturer and Tutor for International Intellectual Property and International Business Law modules at Edge Hill University in 2017. Sadaf is a former deputy convenor of Durham CELLS (Centre for Ethics and Law in the Life Sciences). She was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) from Durham University, School of Education in January 2018. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Research Interests

Sadaf’s research is interdisciplinary, in law, business and moral philosophy. Currently, her research focuses on the business and legal and ethical implications of new technologies. She has a particular interest in the study of intellectual property rights and human rights in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Many of her research projects have focused on European and international IP debates and human rights issues within the context of biotechnology business and the healthcare sector. Within the field of patent law, business accountability and the commercialisation of biotechnological inventions, she has presented her research at a wide variety of international conferences.

Her research in business studies mainly focuses on Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Enterprise. She has also written and presented papers on the impact of environmental CSR initiatives in climate change. Most recently, she has co-authored a book chapter for Palgrave McMillan (and co-presented at 8th International Conference on Social Responsibility, Ethics and Sustainable Business 2019) to analyse Social enterprise and Corporate Social Responsibility comparative literature.

Research supervision 

Sadaf has supervised postgraduate research in the broad area of new technologies in Law and Business, particularly in artificial intelligence, and legal and ethical issues with intellectual property. Sadaf welcomes applications from students who wish to complete MPhils, PhDs or Master’s level dissertations in Law or Business in the above areas and in Corporate Governance, Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Enterprise, Jurisprudential Foundations of Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and Biotechnology and the law and regulation of Information Technology.
