Professor dr Pierre de Gioia Carabellese is not simply a teaching leader (three Teaching Oscars in five years in UK Scotland, HWU, and short-listed on one occasion), but also a teaching organiser, with modules, courses and programmes designed, created, organised globally, not just in Scotland and England (the UK, his country), but around the world. As a pedagogist (with a PGCAP/PGCE successfully completed, and a fellow of Advance HE), Pierre ensures that this innovative approach to teaching be disseminated among colleagues, to guarantee a high student retention, but also the increase of the number of new cohorts.

Professor de Gioia's teaching interests and practice relate to a number of modules: LLB modules, particularly business law (contract law; employment law; discrimination law; banking law; financial regulation; company law) but also English legal system, tort law, trust and equity; wills and administraiton of estates); LLM modules, including SQE 1 and SQE 2; LPC modules.

So far Pierre have experienced all possible teaching methods: on-campus teaching; video teaching; distance teaching in different campuses.

Professor de Gioia Carabellese has designed new modules, new programmes, including more recently a BA in Law in a commonwealth jurisdiction, and new Ph.D. schools.

Pierre deems the PGCAP (post-graduate course in academic practice, passed in all its four components, the English and Welsh PGCE) instrumental in his successful track-record of teaching so far.

Also, thnaks to Professor de Gioia's experience in banks as in-ouse lawyer (e.g. Deutsche Bank, SanPaolo Imi among the others), his teaching in subjects such as bankibng law, financial regulation, corporate law, law of partnerships, insolvency law, contract law is considered uniquely practice-oriented and very effective.

Research Profile

Pierre has been Professor (full) in Business Law and Regulation in Australia (Edith Cowan University, April 2020) and, since January 2022, Professor (full) of Banking and Financial Law in China, Hong Kong Area (Beijing Institute of Technology, School of Civil and Commercial Law). Since April 2024, Pierre has been Professor (full) of Business Law at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics.

Pierre also holds a Docenza  in Italy (at Unimercatorum, where he is the Head of the LLM programmes).

In the area of business law, particularly banking law, company law, employment law, and contract law, Professor dr de Gioia is a world-leader with his more than 100 publications in the last ten years. His competence in banking law and company law is compounded by his Ph.D. in banking and corporate law (Siena, one of the most ancient universities in the world), by his qualified experiences in banks and international law firms as in-house lawyer/financial lawyer, by his research-led teaching in this area in major universities in the world.

These professorial and academic leadership experiences, in the last seven years, have been helpful to address some important leadership factors such as staff management and resource management.

Professor de Gioia Carabellese is a unique academic leadership who, thanks to this experience in banks too, and international law firm, is used to optimising time, financial resources and human resources. With a group of few people, Pierre has become the first professor/academic leader in a position to start a new LLM school outside the British Isles.

The reason for my academic success is due to Pierre's competence, knowledge and enthusiasm. He is a macro-manager, rather than a micromanager. He sets clear goals, but he isnot an obsessive and obsessed reporting line.

In different organisations Professor de Gioia managed to improve the student experiences, via a number of initiatives: exchange programmes with some of the best universities in the world; visiting professorships with one of two lectures, per module, delivered during a specific academic year, in my university by some of the most prominent academics in the world in that area; guest lectures, with one or two lectures during the academic year, delivered by a top representative of the industry closely connected with the discipline of that specific module.

Student satisfaction of his modules is always among the highest ones not only in his school, but also in the whole university.

In terms of staff management, his stewardship is based on leadership, rather than headship. He gives the example, but he is a leader, not a boss: people working with his, particularly academics, see his example, as a professional. He makes sure that they do their best with Pierre accommodating as much as possible their wishes and ambitions. Also thanks to this, Professor Pierre de Gioia Carabellese has become a Chartered Manager too.

He is one of the most successful academic leaders in law in Europe and the UK. Thanks to him being a recognised scholar and practitioner in business law, particularly in banks and multinational company he usually manages to work via knowledge transfer. The KT allows him to “wear the jersey” of the university from time to time, by giving major pieces of advice in very lucrative areas.

Research interests

His research interest lies on business law (banking law, company law, employment law, contract law) and, increasingly, on multidisciplinay analysis of law (midical law, legal history, trust) and interdisciplinary analysis (law and business, law and finance, law and economics).

So far he has  written a number of monographs and books, and approximately 100 research papers in the last 10 years.

Below his list of publications.

Supervision

Ph.D. Supervision

Since 2024, Pierre has been Professor of the Ph.D. School of Unimercatorum. Since 2024, Pierre has been Professor of the Ph.D. School of Universita’ del Salento. Pierre  was Professor of the Ph.D. School at LUMSA (Economics, Law and Management) for the academic year 2023/2024. Furthermore, Pierre was professor at the Ph.D. School in Human Capital Formation and Employment Law of the University of Bergamo. He has acted in this capacity from 2012 until 2022, where the School has achieved its own purposes. He was also been professor at the Ph.D. School in Management, Governance and Law (University Parthenope, Naples).

In the last ten years, Pierre has successfully completed the supervision of four students: dr Antonella Sangiorgio (2016); Dr Alice Bussolaro (2017).

Two were Ph.D. students at the Heriot Watt University/University of Venice, Ca’ Foscari, which is one of the HWU partners. In both cases I acted as co-supervisor.

I have completed, as first supervisor, the Ph.D. supervision of Lorenza di Paolo, at the University of Bergamo (March 2022).

As a second supervisor, l completed the Ph.D. supervision of the Ph.D. Dr Andrea Cosma Mortati (2018), Heriot Watt University/Università La Sapienza, Rome.

At the University of South Wales, I am currently supervising: Dr Camilla Della Giustina (Ph.D. in medical law); Ms Mercy Buku (Ph.D. in finance and law); Mr Jegr Zrari (Ph.D. in tort law).

Experience

I am a recognised Scholar at an international level, particularly in banking and financial law, and corporate law. In my list of publications, you may find, as far as the last three years are concerned, five monographs, one Routledge book, no fewer than 35 research papers in top journals and two research Chapters in edited books. This list shows my role as leader in research. I am also expanding my area of research toward the IT (cryptocurrencies), sustainable finance (ESG), human rights and management of health care resources, and other “ultimate” topics, such as digital banking.

The nature of my research, business law (and particularly banking and financial law), is “interdisciplinary”, as it borders with cognate areas like economics, finance, accountancy management.  Therefore, my research and its methodology would easily fit in a school where there are other Schools. Since I am developing more and more white-collar criminality in both research and practice, my research and teaching agenda perfectly fits into criminology too.

A former banker (San Paolo IMI and Deutsche Bank) and Financial Lawyer (Baker & McKenzie), I achieved my Ph.D. in banking and financial law (with distinction) at Siena University, one of the most ancient universities in the world (1240).

These unique skills, in conjunction with my expertise in common law, civil law, European Union Law in all the different areas of substantive law (employment law, company law, contract law, banking law, etcetera) make me one the very few academicians in the UK and Europe in a position to set up and/or implement LLB programmes in English law, Civil law, Mixed Legal systems as well as highly specialised areas of law, suchs banking law, financial regulation, company law and ESG, employment law and gig economy.

My experience and expertise are very international as I have been/am Professor/visiting Professor/Scientist/Researcher/lecturer in some of the most prestigious universities in Europe. Exchange, programmes and research activities, would be an extremely easy target for me to achieve.

My areas of specialism in research, and teaching too, and professional practice, are: Regulation, with increasing emphasis on public law (ESG, Human rights, social justice, e.g. gig workers); Corporate Governance/Business; Human rights and human cry-conservation;  Banking and Financial Law, including IPOs and M&A; Securities Law; Company/Insolvency Law, including spin-offs; Employment Law/Discrimination Law; Contract Law/alternative dispute resolution; Comparative Analysis of Law; Tort Law; Legal Systems.

Both academically and professionally, Pierre is the few ones in Academia and law arena to be fully specialised in the three main legal systems: Common Law (England and Wales); Civil Law (Italy); Mixed Legal System (Scotland). This is due to Professor de Gioia Carabellese being fully qualified as a lawyer in England and Wales (CILEX Legal Executive), Scotland (Solicitor and Notary Public), and Italy (Avvocato).
