Personal profile

Research interests

Dr Nildo Costa is a senior researcher carrying out research in inorganic chemistry and materials focussing on hydrogen storage and catalysis. He has also interest in the synthesis of advanced functional materials for application in photonics and sensors.

His current project involves the development of transition metal complexes based on Z-class Boron Ligands for the generation, storage and release of molecular hydrogen for application in catalytic processes. This is a very exciting project with great potential for generatiing environmental friendly energy with application in catalysis.

Dr Costa is Director of Studies for a KESSII sponsored PhD and a MRes projects in collaboration with Tata Steel UK as industrial partner. The PhD project aims at developing catalysts for carbon dioxide transformation and utilisation as chemical feedstock leading to sustainable and environmentally friendly processes. The MRes project focusses on the of modified ammonia boranes as a source of hydrogen.

Dr Costa received his PhD degree in 2006 from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in the field of synthetic chemistry, organometallics and catalysis under the supervision of Professor John Gladysz.

He carried out postdoctoral research at the Universities of Bordeaux, Bristol, Saint Andrews and Imperial College London where he prepared aza-helicenes for the generation of circularly polarized light. This latter project was very exciting and led to the publication of articles in Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, Nature Photonics and Chemical Communications.

To date, he has published 35 research articles including three book chapters on catalysis, recycling and properties of catalysts. His current H-index is 16.
