Nicholas Grant Avon is the Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Building Surveying at the University of South Wales, where he oversees the development and delivery of the programme, ensuring students receive a high-quality and industry-relevant education. Alongside his academic responsibilities, Grant contributes to the continual professional development of the academic team, supporting excellence in teaching and learning.
Grant's professional journey began with 14 years of hands-on experience as an electrician and general builder, specialising in residential refurbishment. Seeking to deepen his expertise, he transitioned into the field of building surveying, earning a 2:1 in Real Estate Appraisal and Management, followed by a Master’s degree in Construction Project Management from the University of South Wales. In 2017, he became a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and established Avon & Co Building Consultants Ltd, offering expert consultancy services.
Grant joined academia in 2016, teaching at Coleg y Cymoedd, where he achieved a distinction in a Professional Certificate in Education in 2020. Since 2022, he has expanded his role at the University of South Wales, combining his practical and academic expertise to guide the next generation of building surveyors.
A champion of sustainability, Grant is proficient in ArchiCAD and has designed eco-conscious projects, including a residential bungalow featured in Hemp Today magazine. He has further demonstrated his dedication to heritage and conservation by completing the CIOB’s Understanding Building Conservation course.
Grant’s diverse background in construction, education, and sustainability drives his innovative approach to teaching and leadership, preparing students to meet the challenges of the evolving built environment.
