With an academic and professional background across both Art and Design practice, Mark has written and developed courses in creative subjects across further, higher and postgraduate education and led courses in Graphic Design, Advertising, Illustration, Photography, Animation, Media and Fine Art.
Mark joined the University of Wales Newport in 2009 as the Academic Leader for Design. In this role he led the redevelopment of both the Advertising Design and Fashion Design curriculum, working closely with industry to integrate employability education within each course. During his four years at the University he secured five different teaching innovation awards from both the Higher Education Academy and the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in order to support initiatives that further improved the student experience. These projects centered upon the internationalisation of the curriculum, and improving assessment for learning.
During his career he has been selected as a senior examiner for a national examinations board, and as an external examiner for Kingston University London, University of Glamorgan and a wide range of further education colleges. He is currently an external examiner for both the University of the Arts, London and Nottingham Trent University.
In 2013, Mark established new education initiatives in both China and Germany, and a more extended collaboration with students in Minneapolis, USA.
His research explores the impact of social class upon perceptions and attitudes towards creativity within higher education. His most recent work is published in the International Journal of Art and Design Education.
Mark is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
