Experience

A highly experienced media practitioner, Julie has been a permanent member of the academic staff since 2009. She has brought a wealth of industry experience to her former role as course leader for BA Radio and Sports Journalism. She is now 2021-22 on a part-sabbatical, working two days a week at USW on the new MA in Visual Journalism as well as the Sports Journalism course. 

She previously worked as a print & broadcast journalist & PR consultant & held management positions at ITV & BBC.

She has won two Excellence in Learning & Teaching Awards, for innovation & excellence in student assessment & learning & teaching practice & is also a member of the Higher Education Academy.

After working as an indentured trainee reporter for Northcliffe Newspapers, Julie became a general reporter, then specialised in Arts & Features, before moving to work for ITV as a reporter/producer. A keen sports fan, she was ITV’s first female producer of the weekly football programme, Soccer Sunday. She is still a regular contributor to BBC sport programmes and has a column in Swansea City’s match day magazine Jack.


While at ITV Wales she was Forward Planning Editor & Newsdesk Editor, steering ITV Wales’ BAFTA award-winning coverage of the Sea Empress disaster, among other notable stories.
She spent 11 years at the BBC where she worked in both TV & radio in journalistic and managerial roles. She presented & produced BBC output during the 1999 Rugby World Cup & continues to be actively involved in sports journalism.


She was one of the deliverers of the BBC’s Safeguarding Trust & compliance training. Her last role at BBC Wales was that of Acting Editor, Radio Wales.


During her first year as a full-time member of Atrium teaching staff, Julie won a departmental & university-wide Excellence in Learning, Teaching & Assessment award & has since won a further award for personal development & student employability.
