I am a Lecturer at University of South Wales specialising in sound and documentary and teach on the BA (Hons.) Film programme. Through a career in postproduction sound, I have worked on a range of television, radio, film, and screen arts productions exhibited through broadcast (BBC, Channel 4, and Disney) and in competition at international film festivals (Oberhausen and Sundance).
Through a PhD qualification (University of South Wales), my current research questions whether the inherent artifice of animation - where visuals depart from traditional documentary indicators - shifts the responsibility of ‘authenticity’ towards sound design and explores the limits of acceptable audio manipulation in documentary modes. The project aims to examine the tension between ethics and documentary whilst considering the impacts on the creative scope afforded to sound practitioners. Through development of an analaytical framework, the research works towards contributing new approaches to production methods which are mindful of authentic representation whilst expanding creative possibilities in documentary practice.
