Research interests

Jonathan Durrant is a historian of gender in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

His current research interest is in the experiences of witchcraft in early modern England and Germany. Dr Durrant edits the internationally- acclaimed Witchcraft Bibliography Online.

Other research interests include:

  • masculinity and warfare in early seventeeth-century Germany;
  • early modern history as entertainment.

I am happy to look at proposals for postgraduate research into various aspects of early modern social and cultural history in Germany, England or Wales. These include, but are not limited to, gender, masculinity, friendship, witchcraft and fear. I will also consider proposals to research into the representation of early modern history on film and TV and in museums and other heritage sites.
